This book is about these ordinary means of grace. It does not address the communal means of grace (the Lord’s Supper, public reading of Scripture, Baptism, preaching of the Word and so forth). Rather we are limiting our study here to the personal and private means of grace. Occasionally the spiritual disciplines in this book involve other people (like confession or deeds of charity) but even then the focus is on personal spiritual growth resulting from these disciplines.
